Brazil as the first Elephant Sanctuary in Latin America

Non-profit organization helps recover captive animals

THERE´S NO SUCH THING AS SOUTH AMERICAN ELEPHANTS BUT THERE ARE ABOUT 50 CAPTIVE ELEPHANTS IN IN THIS CONTINENT, ALTHOUGH FIVE COUNTRIES HAVE ALREADY BANNED THE USE OF ANIMALS IN CIRCUSES AND TWO OTHER COUNTRIES WILL SOON FOLLOW THIS STEP.

IN BRAZIL CURRENTLY THERE ARE 11 STATES AND SOME MUNICIPALITIES THAT HAVE LAWS PROHIBITING THE EXHIBITION OF ANIMALS IN CIRCUS SHOWS AND THERE IS A BILL FOR PROHIBITION IN NATIONAL TERRITORY. SOON CIRCUS ANIMAL SHOWS WILL BE BANNED ACROSS THE CONTINENT, WITCH IS GREAT NEWS, BUT NOT ONLY THERE WILL BE ELEPHANTS WITH NO PLACE TO GO, AS ALSO MANY ZOOS THAT ALREADY HAVE RECEIVED RESCUED ELEPHANTS HAVE NO STRUCTURE AND EXPERIENCE TO PROVIDE CRITICAL AND LONG-TERM CARE FOR ANIMALS IN NEED.

TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THIS SCENARIO, SINCE 2010 THE SANTUÁRIO DE ELEFANTES BRASIL HAS BEEN RAISING AWARENESS OF THE NEED TO PROTECT ELEPHANTS. “WE HAVE ALREADY RESCUED TWO ASIAN ELEPHANTS, MAIA AND GUIDA, WHO SPENT FOUR DECADES IN CIRCUSES. THEY ARE LIVING IN THE SANCTUARY SINCE OCTOBER 2016 AND THEY LOOK LIKE NEW ELEPHANTS NOW”, SAYS JUNIA MACHADO, PRESIDENT OF THE SANTUÁRIO DE ELEFANTES BRASIL.

THE NON-PROFIT CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANIZATION IS THE FIRST ELEPHANT SANCTUARY IN LATIN AMERICA AND IS A PROJECT LED BY GLOBAL SANCTUARY FOR ELEPHANTS (INSERT LINK: HTTP://WWW.GLOBALELEPHANTS.ORG/) AND ELEPHANTVOICES (INSERT LINK: HTTPS://ELEPHANTVOICES.ORG/), BOTH INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS THAT RESCUES CAPTIVE ELEPHANTS AT RISK AND GIVES THEM THE SPACE, CONDITIONS AND CARE THEY NEED TO RECOVER PHYSICALLY AND EMOTIONALLY FROM THEIR CAPTIVE YEARS. THE SANTUÁRIO DE ELEFANTES BRASIL IS LOCATED ON A FARM IN THE STATE OF MATO GROSSO. THE PROPERTY IS 40KM FROM THE CHAPADA DOS GUIMARÃES NATIONAL PARK AND 30KM FROM THE PROTECTION AREA AROUND THE PARK (IF CONSIDERED A STRAIGHT LINE) AND IS SURROUNDED BY LARGE FARMS USED FOR SOYBEAN CULTIVATION AND LIVESTOCK RAISING.

ACCORDING TO JUNIA MACHADO, “ELEPHANTS ARE HIGHLY INTELLIGENT BEINGS AND SOCIABLE, WHO WALK FOR 20-21 HOURS A DAY. WHEN IN CAPTIVITY, THEY SUFFER FROM PHYSICAL AND MENTAL ILLNESSES, WHICH OFTEN LEAD TO PREMATURE DEATH”.

AWARENESS AND ACTIONS

WITHIN THE SANCTUARY’S ACTIVITIES ARE THE SEARCH FOR PRESERVATION OF SPECIES, RESCUE AND REHABILITATION OF ELEPHANTS, DEFENCE, PRESERVATION AND CONSERVATION OF THE ENVIRONMENT, PROMOTION OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION, VOLUNTEERING, STUDIES AND TECHNICAL AND SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH AND CULTURAL PROJECTS.

“WE NEED FINANCIAL HELP TO SURROUND THE PROPERTY'S 1100 HA, DIVIDING IT INTO SECTORS - ASIAN FEMALES, ASIAN MALES, AFRICAN FEMALES, AFRICAN MALES. WE ESTIMATE THAT OVER THE NEXT FIVE YEARS WE WILL CONTINUE TO SURROUND SECTORS, GRADUALLY EXPANDING THE AREA USED BY ELEPHANTS, UNTIL THEY CAN EXPLORE ALMOST ALL OF THE PROPERTY”, SHARES JUNIA MACHADO. “IN ADDITION TO THE FINANCIAL RESOURCES, WE NEED HUMAN RESOURCES WILLING TO HELP IN THIS ENDEAVOUR, EITHER IN PERSON AT THE FARM OR VIRTUALLY”, ADDS THE RESPONSIBLE.

IF YOU WANT TO HELP THE ELEPHANTS, YOU CAN MAKE A DONATION, SHARE THE ORGANIZATION’S WORK AND EDUCATE OTHERS. THAT´S WHAT THE WORLD LIFE EXPERIENCE IS TRYING TO DO THROUGH THIS PARTNERSHIP WITH THE SANTUÁRIO DE ELEFANTES BRASIL. “WE BELIEVE THAT THE ULTIMATE PURPOSE OF OUR ORGANIZATIONS IS THE SAME: A POSITIVE IMPACT ON THE WORLD THROUGH PEOPLE'S AWARENESS AND PUNCTUAL ACTIONS”, STATES JUNIA MACHADO.
