CARE FOR DISADVANTAGED CHILDREN AND ELDERLY PEOPLE IN VI THANH, VIETNAM
Assist with healthcare to children and adults with mental, physical and emotional disabilities in Vi Thanh city. Volunteers will work with a Volunteer Vietnam team member in healthcare activities at various times during the week at the Hoa Mai Half Way Children’s Home, the Social Support Center and the Primary School. You will be working in the healthcare program for approximately 10 hours per week with a Volunteer Vietnam team member. When you are not working in the healthcare program, you will be helping out with the other programs, such as the physiotherapy program and teaching program.
About Volunteer Vietnam
Their mission is to connect people with locals in Vietnam, with a long history of operation (founded in 2004) and years of experience in working with international volunteers. Volunteer Vietnam is recognized as one of the biggest volunteer organizations in Vietnam. Their projects aim to reduce poverty and inequalities, through education and sustainable strategies focused on ethical volunteering and social well-being.
The volunteer program is based in the center of Vị Thanh, a provincial city and also the capital city of Hậu Giang Province in Vietnam. A new and small city that is 35 km from the Mekong Capital city Can Tho. The city is in the middle of the delta and has a beautiful landscape with rivers, canals, fruit, and flowers garden. A flat city which is good for biking and hiking with many photo opportunities.
What can you expect
riendly people to make you feel at home. The Volunteer Vietnam team is well organized and each member has experience in working with volunteers. Volunteers are given a weekly schedule of their work times and activities. Volunteers will have a meeting each day with the Volunteer Vietnam healthcare team member to discuss the activities planned for the following day. Healthcare programs take place at 3 sites: The Hoa Mai Half Way Children’s Home Social Support Center The Primary School Care programs include personel hygiene, exercise, yoga, dancing, games, and outdoor activites such as swimming, playing soccer, and going to the park.
The day starts at 7.30 am with breakfast at the volunteer house. At 8 am you will travel to your work place by car, driven by a Volunteer Vietnam team member. You work from 8:30 am to 10:30 am. You return to the volunteer house for lunch around 11 am. Your lunch time is from 11am to 2 pm. This time is your free time to do whatever you like. At 2 pm you will travel to your work place and finish at 4:30 pm. Dinner is served at the volunteer house at 5 pm. In the evening your time is free. Some options are going out for coffee, going downtown, or getting a massage.
The volunteer's weekly work schedule is approximately 5 hours per day from Monday to Thursday and 3 hours on Friday.
Visit the delta by boat for photo opportunities and meet with local people, visiting fruit gardens or rice fields, staying in a bungalow resort in the heart of the delta and get the evening experience about the rural area. You will have the chance to enjoy local food, traditional music and learn cooking. Visit Can Tho Capital City to see floating markets, have some local fruits, walk around the city, and do some shopping.
You need to be at least 18 years old for solo application, or if you are accompanied by your parents.
Available for all professions and skills. Some experience in the education sector would be excellent, but not required. Passion in providing educational support to children.
You need to speak English (basic level).
No restrictions. Global citizens from all over the world are welcome.
Work hours will be around 30 per week on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Services by the organization
Fees are used to provide food, accommodation, local transportation, volunteer and cultural activities for you, and for the program sustainability, management, and support.
You will stay at the volunteer's houses or hotel rooms nearby the volunteer houses depending on the room availability. At the volunteer house, shared bedrooms of 4 volunteers per room (single beds, same gender). In the Hotel, shared bedrooms of 3 volunteers per room (single beds, same gender). All the rooms (in volunteer houses or hotels) are equipped with AC and bathrooms. The volunteer houses are equipped with a living room, dining room, and kitchen where volunteers can relax and have access to internet wi-fi, cable TV, and a computer with printer. Laundry facilities are available.
Your airport pick-up is included in your Program Fee. Your pickup/leave will be made by the NGO car or taxi at the airport by a member of the local team and transported to the volunteer accommodation in Vi Thanh.
Food & Meals
Your Program Fee covers 3 meals per day during the week (from Monday to Friday), and breakfast on Saturday morning, other meals should be covered by you.
We expect all the volunteers to eat at the volunteer houses during the weekdays. Hence, those who stay in hotel rooms will walk to the volunteer houses to eat.
In every volunteer house, we have a cook and a cleaner to serve volunteers. Volunteers will mostly eat the Vietnamese cuisines, but sometimes the cook can serve some western food. The cook can serve all the diets including vegetarian food. If you have any special dietary requirements, please let us know ahead of time so that we can make arrangements for you. Remember that you should be open to trying new foods and be flexible with your eating habits and we will do our best to see that you are well taken care of.
1 and half days per week of sightseeing, cultural activities, and coexistence with nature. Volunteers will have activities during the day, which will last around 6 hours.
Training & Development
You will receive training on arrival (2 days). Day 1: After your arrival, we will show you the city, give you a brief introduction about the organization, and instruct you some Vietnamese language and culture. This will help you enter into the program smoothly. Day 2: Our staff and local teachers will train you about the work. This includes an introduction to the children and an observation session about the volunteer work.
Wi-Fi is available for volunteers in the accommodation site, but there is no WI-FI to the locations of volunteering. You can also buy a local SIM card with data for a mobile phone to keep connected.
Digital badges are intelligent certification logos that provide an effective means of communicating and promoting your accreditations via digital and online mediums. Each digital badge contains pre-validated metadata that can be used to verify your certification status.
WHAT IS NOT INCLUDED
Book your flight to arrive at Can Tho International Airport (VCA) in Can Tho city, Vietnam.
Visa requirements can vary from nationality to nationality. You will need a passport issued by your country of citizenship as well as a Volunteer visa* issued by the country to which you will be traveling. Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months from the expected date of return to your home country.
Make sure you are up to date on routine vaccines before every trip. You should ideally arrange an appointment with your travel clinic at least four to six weeks before travel. In case you have pre-existing health problems, an earlier appointment is strongly recommended.
